Motorcycle Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

You've got questions. We have answers. Welcome to the National General Insurance frequently asked questions page. On this page, we will share information on our motorcycle insurance coverage and safety.

At National General Insurance we work hard to offer our customers the lowest possible motorcycle insurance rates. Riders can save money on their premium by:

  • Choosing a higher deductible or lower coverage limits.
  • Having a history of safe riding.
  • Insuring a motorcycle with safety features.
  • Owning and insuring multiple bikes or vehicles for joint discount savings.

Tip: While low rates are important be sure to consider the overall value of the policy. Choose a policy that focuses on protection through services like roadside assistance, replacement part guarantees and fast, accurate claims handling. Remember, while higher deductibles with less coverage mean lower rates it also means more out- of -pocket dollars with every claim.

National General Insurance offers many discounts to our motorcycle insurance customers. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Touring-Bike Discounts - Touring bikes offer stability, passenger space, and great aerodynamics. They are also cheaper to insure. Examples of touring bikes: The Honda Gold Wing and the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. Ask our agents for details.
  • Safe-Rider Discounts - If you have a history of safe motorcycle riding you may qualify for added savings. Motorcycle riders with a clean driving record and no history of accidents should be sure to let their National General Insurance agent know.
  • Multi-Cycle Discounts - If you own more than one motorcycle and insure them through National General Insurance, you will receive a discounted premium.

Motorcycle insurance is a personalized process and your coverage is determined by looking at many factors. Your agent will consider:

Motorcycle Type - Bikes come in all shapes and sizes. Here is a list of some of the most common styles:

Dual Sport / Adventure Bikes
Cruisers
Touring
Sport and High Performance Motorcycles
Dirt Bikes
Mopeds and Scooters
Antique and Collectible Bikes
Spyder
Trikes
Slingshot (R) / Autocycle
Customized Motorcycles / Choppers
ATVs, UTVs, Golf Carts and more

Tell your agent which style of motorcycle you wish to insure.

Why does this matter?

If you own a scooter you cannot do the same level or property damage as you could with a faster, more expensive Cruiser. Your property damage liability coverage will show that. Your collision and comprehensive is based on the cost of repairs or loss of the motorcycle you insure.

State Requirements - Most states require liability insurance at the bare minimum. Your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)* or your National General Insurance agent can give you more details on the requirements in your particular state.

Leased or Financed Motorcycles - Insuring a leased or financed motorcycle means you will be required to carry collision and/or comprehensive coverage. When the bike is paid off, you can lower your motorcycle insurance premiums by choosing to drop or reduce collision or comprehensive.

Insurance Deductible - A deductible is an amount you must spend, out of your pocket, before National General Insurance will pay on your claim. A higher deductible can lower your motorcycle insurance costs but in the case of an accident or bike loss, you may have to personally pay more upfront.

Drivers - What is the age of the driver? Will your spouse need coverage? Does the driver have a safe riding history? Check with your National General agent to find out who to list on your motorcycle insurance policy.

Maybe. Here's what you need to consider:

Collision coverage is limited to the current cash value of your motorcycle.

Example: If your is worth $10,000 why carry a $20,000 policy? One way to lower your premium is to drop or lower the collision coverage on an older bike.

If you are financing your motorcycle you will be required by your bank to continue to protect the investment with collision and comprehensive coverage.

Tip: If you drop your collision coverage you are responsible for the entire cost of repairs or bike replacement! Be sure to consider both sides of your insurance quote. If you save money by dropping collision will you be able to pay the entire expense out-of-pocket in case of an accident? If your motorcycle is worth $10,000 you may want to insure it for physical damage, comprehensive or collision coverage. These coverages not only provide you with peace of mind protection, but also protect your investment without requiring you to shell out high deductible money.

The main difference is the riders level of exposure. Riding a motorcycle carries a higher risk than driving a car.

At National General Insurance we offer coverage that reflects that risk and rewards safe riders. Your premium will be based on the safety features of the style of bike you choose to insure.

Optional coverage is available including add on protection (up to $20,000) and roadside assistance care. (In the event of a covered accident we help pay for lodging, alternative transportation and up to $300 in towing! ** )

At National General Insurance we cover about everything with wheels. In addition to motorcycles, we cover golf cars, ATV's and UTV's.
